             Photonic and Optoelectronic Packaging (Engr 297)
             -----------------------------------------------

Course Description: The objective of this course is to provide engineers
with a fundamental understanding of photonic and optoelectronic packaging
and its critical role in the functioning of telecommunication and other
electronic products. The lecture topics planned will cover both basics and
practical applications, including:
Basics of Optics & Lasers, Optoelectronic Materials, Precision Placement,
Alignment, Dimensional Tolerancing, Fiber Coupling, Thermal Management,
Polymers & Adhesives for Optoelectronics, Soldering, Solder Metallurgy &
Relevant Phase Diagrams, Practical Aspects of Soldering Techniques, Lid
sealing, Delidding, Rework, Hermeticity, Measuring and characterizing
performance & how packaging affects this, and Reliability requirements and
evaluation techniques.

Lecturers will come from both academia and industry. Students are encouraged
to bring with them topics of interest for class discussion and coverage.

Prerequisites: BS in engineering or physical sciences, Graduate standing,
Consent of instructor.

Times: January 26 ~ May 11, 2002 (Saturdays) 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon;
Room: Engr 301 (SJSU)

Enrollment Info: For those not enrolled in SJSU?s graduate program, this
course may be taken through SJSU?s Open University. The cost is
approximately $500 + cost of textbook and instructional materials. For early
enrollment please contact the SJSU Continuing Education Office at (408)
924-2670.

Enrollment during the first class period will also be facilitated.
