Jeff,
You are right. ISO/IEC 60950 -safety of IT equipment - (= UL 1950) gives
requirements for protection against electrical shock. Any surface touchable by
the user has to be isolated from the telecommunication network voltages (TNV).
There are both surge and duration tests with voltages up to 2.5 kV.
So be sure that the RJ-45 jack is not the only isolation barrier. Isolation
shall maintain in case of a single failure.

Jan:
Another document is UL 1950, section 6.4, which lists ac test voltages of 1.5kV
or 1.0kV, depending on your equipment type. They call it electrical
separation. It's main criteria is no breakdown of insulation.
1.5 kV applies on things normally held during use (i.e. handset or keyboard).
All other equipment is 1.0 kV. Not sure how to interpret that for pluggable
cables and devices-perhaps someone on the list has already made that
interpretation. I also believe these are peak values and not rms. I'm not a
safety expert and invite clarification from those on list who are ....
Hope that helps,
Jeff LaT.

Subject: [SI-LIST] Rj-45 connectors isolation properties
Hello SI-list,
I have a question concerning the (electric) isolation properties of RJ-45
connectors used for 10/100Mbit twisted pair ethernet.
We use an AMP connector (the receptor) and its data sheets states: "the
jack
cavity meets FCC part 68 subpart F".
I have a copy of part 68 code and paragraph 68.304 is about leackage
current
and isolation voltages (between telephone signals and other connections).
I am interested in the electrical isolation. What does this mean in
practice? As
far as I understand it there is a 1000Vrms isolation between the connector
pin(s) and the housing. Or should this be 1500Vrms??
Can anyone provide any details on this??
Kind regards,
Jan Vercammen
