Well Steve, one can lose electrons without crumbling (as in photo-voltaic
cells and cathode ray tubes :-).

Kanak, think about what you are saying.  You are saying that the metal
oxidizes ( loses its electrons to the environment ).  So how long before
the metal completely oxidizes and crumbles off of the board?  I would like
to see this oxidation effect.
