Indie LiteStep is meant as a platform to coordinate 3rd party development on the LS core, to avoid having a million patches floating around on a million websites. The "official" LS devteam can review the changes and include them in the main branch if desired.
The main advantage of using Indie LS vs. using your own personal page is that everyone is working with the same code and the patches get a lot more attention.
