kinda funny you guys mention the 3d thing. The project i was working
on for a while, technically wasn't a real shell i guess, it just hid
the startbar, desktop.. and ran my version of that on top of it.
Getting below that stuff starts to confuse me, since im a designer
not a coder.
Anyway i was trying to use some various 3d engines i found to expand
on my 'dream shell' to execute cool visuals.
This seemed to be a memory hog and not really worth it :)
I use xoblite at home on my win laptop - otherwise i am all OSX now a
days..
However, i found that this generally

so on. Anything else? (I'm tired atm so I could only come up with
the obvious stuff)
I think that pretty much sums up the common interests. Perhaps the
holy grail of actually getting SetShellWindow to work properly with
Explore / File Open / File Save dialogues would be cool as well.
Finally, maybe we should also share our views on "the future of
the alternative

diluted?!) Will it
still be worth the hard work 1-2-3 years from now? How will *your*
shell evolve?
How will the rise of Vista, MacOS X 10.5 Leopard and Linux with
Compiz Fusion
affect us? Is there a place for alternative shells stuck in a 2D
world when the
regular desktop goes 3D? Is a move to .NET inevitable also for us
in the
medium/long term if we want to stay competitive? Maybe some new
hotshot
developer will suddenly appear and blow us all out of the water
with mad 3D
skillz? ;)
I think that the commonly used system functions (i.e. the undocumented
ones what I believe we all use), it common across shells, regardless
of the implementation language. Like I mentioned, I've been
collaborating with BilliBerserker from the SharpE camp, which develop
using Delphi, where as Emerge is implemented in C/C++.
As for 3D, that doesn't hold a lot of interest for me, personally I'm
waiting for holographic or virtual reality shells. :P
Cheers!
