Just browsing the archives and noticed someone mentioned that
SHChangeNotifyRegister stops sending notifications when Explorer is no
longer around.  As long as you get Explorer's DDE server started before
calling SHChangeNotifyRegister() you should find that notifications work
okay even without explorer itself.
