Unshakeable Beliefs

by Ambassador Shy Ja'Reth and Lt. Christopher Kitson

Upon hearing that the ship had invaders on board Christopher had let his
training take over and headed to the armoury and collected two phaser rifles
and three hand phasers.

He ducked and dived his way to the Ambassadorial quarters, narrowly avoiding a
squad of Jem'Hadar purely by luck. He was out of breath, heart threatening to
burst from his chest when he reached the now unguarded door and pressed the
chime with urgency.
Shy's training had not prepared her for the fear in her belly she'd felt when
the ship had rocked and then the following announcement.
Her aides had scrambled to post sentry by the doors, intending them to remain
locked. Shy sat silently, fighting dilligently not to nervously chew on her
lower lip.
The noise outside had the aides instantly alert, but they did not want to say
anything in hopes no one would realise there were inhabitants of the quarters.
Perhaps they would escape death.
He rang the chime again, "Ambassador, it's Lieutenant Kitson. Are you alright
in there?" His heart continued to pound against his ribs.

Shy nodded at her aides to allow the door to open. They did not respond
immediately.

"I apologise, my lady, but what if... what if he were making the request to
enter under duress?"

He had a valid point. Shy thought a moment, then asked, "Computer, please tell
me the number of humanoid lifeforms in the corridor outside this room."

"Three," the computer chirped with out of place cheer.

"Identify."

"Valeo, personal aide to Vice Chairman Tiriko; Jordan'Lao, aide to Ambassador
Shy Ja'Reth; Lt. Christopher Kitson, Shadowdancer crewman and Starfleet
liaison."

Shy looked at Romeus, conveying her appreciation, but also silently ordering
him to let the lieutenant enter. The aide manually opened the door, ushering
Kitson inside, then closed it quickly. The ambassador stood.

"I would have preferred to meet you again under more pleasant circumstances,
Lieutenant."

"So would I, your Excellency. Is there any reason that your door is unguarded
Ma'am? Or are they well camouflaged?" he dropped the armful of weapons he'd
been carrying on a nearby chair.

"My only guards are specially trained aides. There are two in the corridor
outside, but you have clearance to be here." Shy eyed the weapons with
distaste, though even that look was refined. "What have you brought into my
quarters, sir? I do not believe that they will be neces-"

Shy was cut off as Colton's stunted transmission about mercenaries and the
Ambassadors being in danger came across the ship-wide comm system.

"I think your Excellency, that they may well be necessary." His blue eyes
showed a rare steely quality. "Dominion forces and mercenaries, both parties
after you. Trained aides are all well and good, but trained security would be
much better. I am proficient, Eleanor made sure of that, the question is are
you going to be able to help us defend you when that becomes necessary?"

"I will follow the orders of those protecting me, including you, sir, but I
will not wield a weapon if that is to what you're referring." Shy spoke softly,
but with conviction. She had never brought bodily harm upon anyone and she
never would. It would make her unclean in the eyes of her people. Whereas
Vulcans, Shy had learned, had reached peace through logic, her people had
reached that same place through pleasure. While both races had been vicious at
one time, they had both learned from their mistakes. Murder, even in self
defense for an Argellian would not be tolerated. She would die before
committing such atrocity.

"Apologies Ambassador. I am well aware of the Argellian culture and your races
feelings on this matter." He looked at the beautiful woman wearily, "Will you
at least use one set on heavy stun if the mercenaries break through. The
Jem'Hadar we will have to deal with without your assistance."

"I'm sorry, but no. I cannot willingly inflict any harm upon another
individual." She sighed. "I must sound entirely archaic to you in this war torn
world, but if we do not stand for the things in which we believe, even under
these circumstances, what sort of beings are we?"

Christopher nodded, "It's nice to know there are still people prepared to hold
dear to their beliefs Ambassador. Would you prefer to remain here with us or
return to your private room?"
