The Job by Nate Farris and Dan Manson The two walked into the darkness, Nate almost too ready to expect something deceptive. Cardassians were anything but honorable. Dan too, looked around the dark room, phaser in hand, ready to shoot anything that might be considered a threat. Nate couldn?t blame him, this wasn?t the best first job with a crew full of Cardassian non-sympathizers. They didn?t need to know each other, all they had to be was human. And for a crew that was almost all human, putting two and two together wasn?t all that hard. The dramatic bask of light hit the two, and Nate reached over to Dan, pressing the man?s phaser down a little. "I don?t like this," Dan hissed. Nate understood, and he didn?t trust this setting. Not at all. "Overly armed, don?t you think? For a meeting that?s going to be your- what do you humans call it.. Paycheck?" A Cardassian came out from the darkness, dressed in simple civilian clothing. But his presence was anything but. Two strange voices made their presence known all too well. Nate looked past the Cardassian, as the two of his guards were taller, bulkier and definitely by the sound of it; Breen. "Don?t worry about my compatriots, human. They are no threat to you. As long as you don?t pose a threat. My assistant here would like your partner to lower his weapon. This is after all, a business arrangement." "In the cover of darkness?" Nate asked calmly. Dan lowered his weapon in a frustrated movement. "Of course, I can?t have you identifying me just in case you think the money is not good enough to work for us." "It?s good enough." "Right," the Cardassian barked, "just like Ferengi keep their word. Now listen." "Let?s get this over with," Dan replied with an angry tone. "Right you are," the Cardassian?s humor seem to drain almost immediately, "your contact, a Mr. Entek, has assured me that you two can be trusted with the cargo I need shipped. Is he correct?" "Yes," Nate replied. "Good. For the most part, you will have documentation and everything else you need to pass the security check points. Do not deviate. Jem?Hadar do not have tolerance for disobeying the rules, and considering that your ship is Saber class vessel that we are all too familiar with, they will shoot you out of space before you have hailing frequencies opened." "Understood." "Do you?" The Cardassian gave a sneer, but it couldn?t be seen, "do not meddle with the cargo. It stays as is. And I can assure you that the prisoners will receive the medical attention promised. We certainly can?t keep our slaves..." Dan moved up but Nate held him back. The Breen guards came up to Cardassian?s sides. "Your friend needs to learn some control." "Don?t worry about us." "There?s been another change in plans," the alien said simply, "you?ll receive three-fourths of the payment upon your delivery." "What about the remainder?" "What about it? If you haven?t noticed, Cardassian currency is running a little low. Trying to fund the equal amount in Federation credits was quite sizable." The alien looked at both of them. His head clearly shifting from Nate to Dan, almost studying them, "will you take it or not?" "We?ll take it," Nate replied. "Good, your ship will be preparing for transport in twelve hours. Do not delay after the cargo is on board. Those medical supplies will last as far as the energy cells in them." "You son of a..." The Cardassian laughed as he headed out the door, "have a good day. You?ll receive notification for the transport. Let?s hope you are hasty as Entek said you would be." The doors closed and the lights turned on to it?s normal settings. Nate turned too look at his partner, but Dan was already walking out the other exit. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Search presents - Jib Jab's 'Second Term'
