& Shane Taggart
"This damned hydrospanner is not calibrated properly." Shane screamed at the piece of equipment in his hand before throwing it across the shuttlebay. The clatter it made as it slammed into a cargo container was music to his ears as he sighed and rubbed some sweat from his brow. "Probably couldn't be calibrated right even if I torqued with it. Damn it."
Minutes later he found himself in the armory attempting to find the most popular engineering equipment. He knew how Starfleet worked: they always kept spares of the best equipment locked in the armory as well. "Hydrospanner, hydrospanner, where are you...?"
"I doubt that you'd find something like a hydrospanner in here," came a voice from the corner.
He turned and saw a man in a dark corner. His instinct forced him to find the nearest object that he could and laid his hand on it, not bringing it to level, but ready to be used if it was called upon. "I'm sorry. Starfleet usually keeps spares around here in the event they're pillaged or something. They're dreadfully anal about it. I'm Shane Taggart. You are?"
"Varon T'Sar," he said while emerging from the darkness. "You another new crew member?"
"Yeah," Shane said, nodding. Varon T'Sar? Why does that sound familiar? "You're Romulan."
"Yep," Varon replied. "And you're not." Varon walked over to a chair a sat down.
He was on edge again. Shane had lived among them long enough to know what they were capable of, appearing that way or not. "I haven't heard any of the Starfleet people talking about a Romulan onboard; hell, I haven't heard any of the crew mention you either. Do they know that you're down here, or are you a stowaway?"
Varon chuckled. "Funny you should say that. But no, I'm not a stowaway. I mean I was, but people know I'm here now. Some people are ok with me, some are afraid of me, I don't think any of them really trust me, but it doesn't bother me."
Shane couldn't suppress a grin, "Afraid? Of you?"
"Yeah, one girl had a mental breakdown when she saw me. I think she’s a little crazy anyways though."
There's something else, but what is it? Shane thought to himself, gauging the man up and down over and over again. "Were you ever a resident on Rham Izad station?"
"Oh yeah. In fact, that's where I was staying before I came on board here."
Destis' goons? "Did you work for Destis?"
"No, I didn't."
"Of course, that would've been seven years ago." Shane recovered quickly, "Yeah, I figured that everyone worked for her at some point or another on Rham Izad. Work being as slim as it was there. So, how'd you find herself here?"
By accident. "By chance I guess you could say."
Shane new better than to pry into personal affairs, especially those of Romulans. His eyes lingered momentarily on the man before going back to his work and digging through cargo containers and old equipment. He went through an entire cargo container that should've been thrown out an airlock. "Intriguing. So, what do you do here?"
"Oh you know. A little of this, a little of that," he lied.
Reading that like a book, Shane looked up. "You're on the run, aren't you?" His mind tried to grasp the reason behind the man running. To be utterly blunt, he didn't look like someone who was a prowler or a member of the Tal Shiar that did any heavy duty. Then again, bigger things have come in smaller packages than that. "Who'd you piss off?"
"No one that you'd know."
"Let's just say, someone, who would stop at nothing, to hunt me down. And, leave it at that."
He nodded, knowing all to well the situation the man must be in. Still, Shane couldn't help but think the man looked awfully familiar to having just met him. "Yes, I understand that." He played in the equipment, not really searching but just moving the ones he knew he couldn't use aside, "You like it here?"
"You don't talk much, do you?" Shane said, calling over his shoulder.
"No, not usually, I've found that most people don't like talking to Rihannsu much."
Don't I know it. Shane thought to himself as he stood up. "Well, I'll talk to anyone at any time." He offered his hand to the man, realizing that they hadn't shook. "It's a pleasure to know you, Varon, I'm sure I'll find myself scrounging around down here again. Perhaps you can come visit me sometime in the shuttlebay."
"Sure, maybe I'll run into you on the ship somewhere."
"Well, I've found what I need," he lied, standing and heading for the door. "Thanks for your conversation."
"Not a problem. See you around."
