Trace your family tree How well do you know your family history? You probably know your immediate family pretty well. But your more distant genealogy may be less clear. That's a shame. Every family has fascinating stories somewhere in its lineage. Researching your family tree is a worthwhile endeavor. But where do you start? There are a number of sites that can help for free. Check these sites before signing up for a site that charges you a lot of money (like www.a <http://www.ancestry.com> ncestry.com) A good first stop would be Family Search. It's a database run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Few groups know more about genealogy. Search your family but don't stop there. The church also has free software to keep track of your family tree. It's great. Most families have roots outside of this country. And many came by ship at the turn of the last century. A majority of them came through Ellis Island. The Ellis Island Foundation lets you search through immigration records. There are many other sites. Many focus on specific types of genealogical records. Cyndi's List puts links to hundreds of the sites in one place. You'll find ship and passenger lists, adoption and death records, and more.
