[School-GNU-Linux] new os instalation

sir,
after installing the new os and the system reboots, there is an error in opening nautilus. i had called u today asking u what to and u asked me to remove all '.' files from dos prompt. but when the command rm -r .* was given, the message got was "cannot remove '.' or '..' ". this was the same case when logged in as user. i tried reinstallation. still the same problem. 
do u have a solution for this?
