If you are not getting the GUI please check the error message you got.
If it says "I Cannot start XServer" then the driver you selected for
your graphics card may be wrong.
to find out the graphics card installed in your system do the following:
login the system as root user. You will get a "#" prompt. Type in the command:
lspci | grep VGA
check the line displayed, which says something like "VGA compatible
graphics controller Intel Corp. 82845.." (if it is a intel one)
check the number if it is a intel card. If it is below 82915 your
graphics driver is i810
if the line shows Unknown device or a number greater than 82865 then
the driver is vesa
if it is nvidia/geforce then driver is nv
for s3 Savage cards the driver is savage etc..
then give the command:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 to reconfigure the graphics.
you can give default values for most of the questions asked. Please
note the following questions:
The first one will be to choose a driver: Select the one you find with
lspci command.
Then there will be a question of video memory. give it as 8192
in monitor configuration, choose the simple.
choose the resolution [ ]1024x768 using space key (a star will be
there in the left side to indicate the item is selected.)
Say no to the question for enabling "Frame Buffer"
After answering all the questions, you will get back to #
give the command /etc/init.d/gdm restart
to restart the graphics server.
Hope this helps.
