[School-GNU-Linux] dvd rw problem

pls help me to solve the problem of my dvd r/w drive which always shows the 
message "blank cd" when a cd with data is inserted in it.Also dvd rom is not 
accessible in  it @school linux .
model: sony nec-ad-7200a
