We didn't recognize the guy, who was wearing a white/red Specialized kit. Kinda
looked like Gord Frasier, formerly of HealthNet.
They said goodbye and turned left onto Family Farm Rd (probably headed to
Westridge for a short-cut, or to his friend's house in PV.) We decided not to
be ramoras and continued on the Loop.

Waaaaaaay cool dude! Lance wasn't riding with Bobke Roll was he? Yea,
Pappa **has** to be Gary the Golden Descender! Hey, I saw in the Mercury News
on Friday, in the big article on Bob Roll (who grew up in Pleasanton and rode
Diablo all the time), that Lance called him to be his riding partner for the
first 10 days after his cancer treatment was over. Lance said he really needed
someone to cheer him up, and Bobke (I believe they said is actually the Dutch
translation for "Bob") always cracked him up with his wise-ass remarks,
discombobulation of the English language and other "antics" on the bike! Bob
had said he was more than happy to help out.
Well, I rode out for a lot of, and back with a lot of the Spectrum ride
--- but couldn't quite stay in contact the whole time. Am not necessarily that
"unfit", and no problems with endurance or climbing, but this is the first
speedwork I've done all year and I have a ways to go yet. Not to mention how
they attacked Arastedero today. For those who have ridden it, when the group
turns from Page Mill onto Arastedero they always are riding OK sporty, but the
back of the pack usually compresses towards the front until up to when the
actualy steeper part of Arastedero starts, then it spreads back out as the hill
hammers go down. After the turn today it was like coming out of a corner in a
criterium at 30 mph, they went like the blazes and it actually strung out
before the hill, no compression effect whatsoever. Absolutely "refreshed" my
memory of what it's like to ride at a balls-to-the-wall race pace, 'fer sure!
Rick was in the group and yelled twice at me to say "Hi", but I think we were
both having to concentrate on the wheels in front of us and around us so hard
we couldn't actually talk. BTW, coming back towards Woodside on Canada as we
were screaming along, I was riding next to some female PA racer when we both
heard KA - BAM!!!! right at our rear wheels. We both thought we had flatted in
the rear, but thankfully (for us), it was some dude's front tubular that blew,
sounded like it had 150 lbs in it when it popped. I couldn't hear for a couple
of minutes after, I know.
Well, keep riding with those TdC pros out there, see you all on "da
road"........

First Gary and I ran into Lance and buddy on the loop, then rode with them for
a few minutes. Lance yelled "pick it up Pappa" (you figure out who he was
talking about) when our pace slowed. He must be here for the ToC. Very cool.
Then we saw Stan in the Spectrum ride, looking fit and fast -- wow.
