July 10-14 8:30-12:30 $200
per week
July 17-21
Does you school or personal schedule lack AP Science courses? Have you ever
considered preparing for the College Board AP Exam in Biology independently, or
online, or through a home school program but realized you lacked access to
laboratory facilities, materials, and expertise to complete the required AP
Labs. Then this two-week course may be for you! Get the required lab work done
the summer before you tackle the course content. The AP Biology Lab course will
complete the 12 required AP Labs in two weeks of instructional and laboratory
time. Pertinent biological principles will be reviewed, lab techniques taught,
experimental data collected and analyzed, and a lab notebook based portfolio of
your written reports will be created.
BEGINNING LEGO ROBOTICS Grades 7-12
June 12-16 9:00-1:00 $150
Learn to create programmable robots that navigate obstacles, follow trails, or
react to changes in light using the LEGO Mindstorms' Robotics Invention System
and RoboLab PC software. A first-time user with basic PC skills will be able to
design, program, and build a simple robot in one or two hours.
CSI: COLUMBIA Grades
10-12
June 19-23 8:30-12:30 $200
Become a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) for 5 days and learn to use forensic
science to collect and analyze evidence such as body fluids, fibers, hair
samples, insects, casts of shoe prints or tire prints, fingerprints, crime
scene measurements, DNA finger printing, etc. to solve fictional crimes.
Critical thinking, problem solving, lab techniques, physics, biology, and
chemistry are all part of this course.
CELL BIOLOGY & CANCER Grades 10-12
June 19-23 8:30-12:30 $200
Students will learn fundamental cell biology as they investigate the biological
basis of chemical poisons, family history, radiation exposure, and ultraviolet
light in causing cancer, and try to make sense of the many observations people
have made about risk factors related to cancer. The course will use a
standards-based curriculum that focuses on the major biological concepts
related to the development and impact of cancer. (Publication No. 99-4646)
(Office of Science Education and National Cancer Institute)
COMPUTER CONSTRUCTION Grades 9-12
June 19-23 8:30-12:30 $150
Students will spend this week discovering what is inside the modern personal
computer. The course will focus on the hardware and software components and
their assembly into a personal computer. From motherboards to memory, to CPUs
students will learn about the function and specifications of the different
devices in a computer. The course will culminate in a group activity with the
students working together in the hands-on assembly of hardware and installation
of software of a personal computer.
DNA SCIENCE Grades
7 -12
June 12-16 8:30-12:30 $200
This exciting introductory Gene Technology course will explore methods to
isolate, amplify, manipulate, and analyze DNA sequences by performing as many
as 12 rigorously tested and reliable lab experiments in molecular biology,
developed at the internationally renowned Dolan DNA Learning Center of Cold
Spring Harbor Laboratory, culminating in the construction and cloning of a
recombinant DNA molecule.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES Grades 9 -12
June 12-16 8:30-12:30 $200
HIV, Ebola, Avian Flu(H5N1), Pertussis, Asian Flu, etc. are challenges to our
health. In this course students will follow a standards-based curriculum form
the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that focuses on the major concepts
related to emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, and their impact on
society. Lab activities include 1) Deadly Diseases Among Us, 2) Disease
Detectives, 3) Superbugs: An Evolving Concern, 4) Protecting the Herd, 5)
Making Hard Decisions
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL ROBOTICS Grades 9-12
June 19-23 8:30-12:30 $200
The FIRST Vex(tm) Challenge (FVC) is a pilot, mid-level robotics competition
for high-school students. It offers the traditional challenge of a FIRST
competition but with a more accessible and affordable robotics kit. The FIRST
Vex Challenge grew out of the existing FIRST Robotics Competition and the FIRST
Robovation platform. FIRST, Radio Shack, and Innovation First collaborated to
develop an improved version of the FIRST Robovation kit. The new kit is
significantly upgraded and is called the Vex Robotics Design System. Learn to
design, construct and program the new VEX Robotics Competition Robot.

OCEANOGRAPHY MAPPING WITH ARCVIEW Grades 8-12
July 17-21 8:30-12:30 $200
Channel Island National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS), located of the coast of
southern California, has been a leader in using geographic information systems
(GIS) to help manage and assess the unique biological, physical, and cultural
resources of this pacific marine environment. This ArcView GIS based course
will teach students to employ this computer software application to analyze
aerial surveys of vessels and marine mammals, data from response assistance
studies for oils spills, economic and ecological impact studies, data for the
possible establishment of new marine reserves, ongoing monitoring and site
characterization efforts, and a review of the response to the January 2000
crash of Alaska Airlines Flight #260 into CINMS. http://www.esri.com/index.html
PHYSICS OF MUSIC Grades 7-12
July 10-14 8:30-12:30 $200
The physics of music will be explored by constructing working musical
instruments, including pan pipes, flutes, chimes & possibly a "PVC" as used by
Blue Man Group®. Fundamental principles of wave mechanics and acoustics will be
taught.
PHYSICS OF WARFARE Grades 8-12
July 17-21 8:30-12:30 $200
The trebuchet was the most successful and feared medieval siege engine.
Students will build, analyze, and fire a small scale working trebuchet.
Introductory Physics topics will include projectile motion, conservation of
momentum, angular momentum, and conservation of mechanical energy.
ROLLER COASTER PHYSICS Grades 8-12
June 19-23 8:30-12:30 $200
How fast can a roller coaster travel and still stay on the track? How tall
does the first hill need to be to make it around the entire track? How tight
can the turns be? What forces must a passenger endure and enjoy for a fun ride
on a roller coaster? Learn the fundamentals physics associated with roller
coaster design and performance by constructing and testing your own model
roller coaster. Then you'll be ready to visit Paramount's Carowinds and
personally collect data on the BORG Assimilator, Carolina Cyclone, Hurler,
Thunder Road, Top Gun, or Vortex coasters.

Rising ninth through twelfth graders are encouraged to make plans to spend a
week at the Teton Science School (TSS), one of the premier experiential
learning centers for environmental science in North America. Students
experience the natural world through exploration of the landscape and wildlife
in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. The TSS general ecology program offers
hands-on studies that include basic concepts in geology, botany, zoology,
astronomy, and ecosystem dynamics. Motivated students interested in field
research and experiential learning will benefit from this experience. Earn ¼
