[samscommunity] Re: School Report Cards

Hi, my name is Tamara Jacobs and I have an 8th grader at SAMS. I transferred
him from Alcorn Middle School because of the school's poor performance. I was
never really satisfied with the way they ran that middle school, but what else
could I afford to do. I use to be very involved in the school, but when you're
rubbed the wrong way by the principal himself, well, you're fighting a loosing
battle. All I could do at that time was look out for MY child. When I got the
opportunity to have him moved because of the school's grade I quickly had him
moved to SAMS. I can definitely see a difference in him and in his work.

I'm not going to sit here and look at another school district (Lexington) and
wonder how they do it. I KNOW how they do it! Those parents are VERY involved
in their children's school and they shell out money out of their own pockets as
well. Don't let them fool you. Those parents go deep in their pockets and
pay. They pay for the education that their children are getting and they
support that school and their teachers. That's how THEY do it.

How do WE do it? Well SOME of us are involved in our child's school and SOME
of us even support our teachers, but the MAJORITY of us think it's someone's
job and rely on them to do it. I for one am very involved in my children's
schools and I help them with their work. I don't volunteer in the classrooms
like I would like to, but I do observe every once and a while and all I've got
to say is, THERE HAS GOT TO BE ANOTHER WAY TO DO THIS!

For those of you who have never observed a class or even monitored during lunch
time, it's amazing. Some of these children are out of control. And just when
you think that calling their parents would resolve some of this, some of their
parents are just as bad as the child. Then what do you do with that child?
That child never had a chance with parents like that. I've seen it first hand
and it's ugly. Teachers shouldn't have to deal with that kinda of atmosphere
and neither should the children who want to learn.

I honestly believe that the school district needs to form a disciplinary task
force. This task force will be responsible for dealing with those children who
disrupt the classroom. Once this child is referred to this task force, the
child and their parents MUST appear in person to discuss the problem. So many
times, when a child disrupts the class, they are suspended and you don't even
see the parent. SUSPENSION is NOT the answer as a child can't learn if they
are NOT in school. That parent needs to be held accountable!

The majority of the parents listed in this mailing list are very involved and
very concerned about their child and SAMS, but I think we may be the 20% that
actually cares. The other 80% is sucking us, the administrators and especially
the teachers dry and making it hard for us to care about SAMS and any other
child in the school system.

One parent ask what can we do? You're already doing all that you can do. The
only other think you can do is either move to Lexington County or put your
child in a private school. At least if you put your child in a private school,
you get what you pay for and that's an education!

It takes a special person to be a teacher. I sure hope we have a lot of those
at SAMS. Thanks for letting me get off my soap box, but this subject is VERY
personal for me.

Bravo Melissa Bowan! I agree with you totally. The answer to your question:
Who grades our schools? Our school is graded by the State Department according
to test scores from our students! The level of education earned by the
teachers along with their absentism on the job. Tracking of students per year
according to test scores. If students and their families are transient, that
brings
down the continuity of learning. Serving all students is important. If you are
busy dealing with behavior problems and issues from homes, well that burns the
academic rigor that is needed in the classrooms.
Teachers cannot teach if they are riot police. Has anyone sat in a classroom
at SAMS? I have and my son is an AAP student. The low level of respect to
teachers and adults in general is too much for me to digest.
Overall I am satisfied with the job my son's teachers are doing! I buckled
down on him. He has to be responsible for his learning. His PACT scores are
good
but I want them to be better. I make sure he is reading good literature,
limited TV time, and structured activity. No video games during the school year.
Only on holiday and Summer. That time is also limited. If your child spends
ample time in the tube or video gamming, well how can a teacher compete with
that
kind of entertainment.
If parents are not a part of the "Buckled Down Crowd" then your child, our
children will not be successful. Slack parents=slack children. A Parent of a
Seventh Grade SAMS student. Rosalind Cook-Hillian
