Very Important Information (please pass this message on to other
middle
school parents):

On Monday, August 27, 2007, the Columbia High School PTSA will meet at
6:30 PM in the auditorium. Dr. John Lane, from the Career and
Technology Education Department of the SC Department of Education,
will
be the featured speaker.

He will address parents and students about new laws concerning
education and career goals. It is not too early for middle school
students to plan and prepare for their future. The eighth grade theme
this year is "Where do you want to go to college?" Throughout the
school year, you will hear about events, speakers, and projects that
reflect this theme. This meeting would be a good lead into assisting
your child with his/her future path.

Did you know...

In May 2005, Gov. Mark Sanford signed the Education and Economic
Development Act (EEDA), new legislation designed to give South
Carolina
students the education tools they need to build prosperous, successful
futures.

Eighth grade students work with their parents or parental designees
and guidance counselors to create Individual Graduation Plans (IGPs)
that reconcile their academic and post-graduation goals.

IGPs are adjusted annually to allow for a student's continued academic
growth and career exploration through high school. Personal Pathways
ensures seamless transition to post-secondary education by
establishing
articulation agreements among the state's high schools and two- and
four-year colleges.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All current eighth graders will have a preliminary IGP created by the
end of this current school year.

To learn more about this new mandate, please attend Dr. Lane's session
at Columbia High School on Monday, August 27, 6:30 PM in the
auditorium.
