Richland One Celebrates the Joy of Reading
You?ve never seen a reading program like this one. On September 30, Richland
One pulls out all the stops in its annual celebration called Reading Rocks. The
entire community is invited to enjoy a day of fun at Keenan High School, 3455
Pine Belt Road. From 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. it?s non-stop entertainment that
begins with a literacy parade led by USC mascot Cocky, Clifford the Big Red
Dog, a host of local celebrities and storybook characters. After that, visitors
can experience an amazing array of events and activities that include meeting
local and national authors, tae kwon do demonstrations, puppet shows, praise
team dancers, a vintage car show, band performances, storytelling and
distribution of free books. But there?s still much more. While the kids enjoy
the world champion Double Dutch Forces jump rope team, adults can visit the
Parents? Corner to pick up free books, get a blood pressure screening or
register to vote. Plus, visitors can take advantage of interactive booths and
displays from dozens of organizations, such as the fire department, sheriff?s
office, EdVenture Children?s Museum, and Palmetto Health Baptist. The theme of
this year?s celebration of reading is Reading Rocks on the Radio. Local radio
personalities have been invited to read to children.
"Celebrations like Reading Rocks help to underscore the importance of reading
and literacy for students of all ages," said Ida Thompson, Richland One?s
director of instructional technology. "We are fortunate to have both quality
library programs and the Reading Is Fundamental program to help students and
parents develop reading skills and confidence through the enjoyment of quality
literature."
