MESSAGE FROM ST. ANDREWS MIDDLE SCHOOL:
Hello all,
I have not been at work for a few days, and I have realized that the
messages have accumulated concerning the meal applications. I am
including messages below that could not be delivered. The system will
hold messages for approval for a day before they are discarded and the
administrator is unable to send them. Please continue to read below.
Also, I have sent messages to several people in Student Nutrition
Services and am awaiting a response. I will forward the message when it
is received.
Messages to SAMS Community Discussion List (there are many):
As a former teacher at St. Andrews, I offered my homeroom students
these forms on a daily basis during the first two or three weeks MONTHS
of school.
Only two or three students actually took them home. Even after I
repeatedly reminded them that they must reapply each year. Each year,
I would also have students who ran up large cafeteria debts.
However, the school is not the only responsible party in this
situation. This is a service you are requesting for your child, as
such, parents and students must assume some responsibility for
obtaining and completing this paper work. The school is providing the
paperwork, it is up to the student to take it home and bring it back.
I think we need to keep in mind that the we are relying on children
to deliver this information. Even the most responsible child can
forget or lose important paperwork. These are still children and
don't always remember to do the things they are asked to do.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We as parent want to remember that each circumstance and household is
different and we do not want to make light of any of those factors. I
only wanted to suggest that in a day and age when electronics and
computer use is so ramped we should see the district engage in more of
these type of activities. An electronic or downloadable form will
with this help. I believe this will eliminate some of the problems and
provide more accuracy on the Food and Nutrition department when it
comes to auditing and re-registering for each year. Lets say the
person incharge(Food and Nutrition) on open house night has a computer
set up she could check last year status and update this year status.
This same format can be set up for during the summer at different sites.
And if its electronic parents can submit ahead of time and only need to
check status on open house night. Even better have a place on Richland
One on to go and check your child's status. And follow up if there is a
problem. We must remember they have created ways for parents to make
payments so why not take the process a little futher and automate the
entire process. "We have not because we ask not". These a just
suggestions and ideas for us to ponder. And to respond to some one
comment about parental involvement yes we do want that as much as we can
get. Parental involvement benefits our children and the school. So
keep up the good work and those who haven't tried it yet let make to
effort to support our school and children, we know you are not able to
make to all the events on the calendar but pick one and try it. Its
good quality time spent with your children in a society of fast pace
living and minute meals. =20
To all be bless and have great weekend. And remember you are welcome to
any or all SIC meeting held the 3rd Tuesday of every month.

Happy Friday Everyone!=20
Sure the school has responsibility, I definitely agree with that, but
to what extent is the school responsible. I also agree with the
statement of factoring in the cost of paper as I have supplied the
school/teachers with copier paper personally. I also agree with on the
online process of completing the lunch applications and think that was a
great suggestion. This is not a new process; we have to do this every
year, therefore we should be familiar with the formalities.
I think it is great that we can look at each of the comments,
concerns, and suggestions and work actively on solving the
"problem(s)"...lastly, it is all the time we have to do what we have to
do as mothers (parents), not just sometimes. Our work (as good parents)
is NEVER complete; there is ALWAYS a battle to fight or a fire to put
out. =20
Thank you all for the opportunity to share in this wonderful channel
of communication because I wholeheartedly believe that communication is
the key...
Blessings,
Brigit C. Malloy

I think that it should stay the way it was; with the school sending it
home with the folder of papers at the beginning of the year end of
story. If they were included with that folder, there would be no
questions to answer. You would know that each child had an
application.

........Yes it's even different at the High school, most of the kids
don't' even eat the lunch, the lines are sometimes to long they don't
have time between periods etc. So get ready because they always want
extra money to eat from the canteen or to send out and sometimes they
starve!!!!. You have to make sure they eat a good breakfast and
balanced meals at home......Bring a not home :) forget that you might
get it and you might not, I thought High School was a breeze but you
have to be more alert and really participate more I have 2 at the high
school.....this is my 4th year at the High......You have to find info
out for yourself most of the time.

In response to Ms. Haggins regarding the lunch application. Sites
were
set up during the month of July for parents who needed applications.
It was advertised on both television and local radio stations. St.
Andrews Middle was named as one of the sites, but that was changed to
H. B. Rhame Elementary. Our representative was there daily processing
applications for parents. If you have any additional comments regarding
lunch applications and the way they are handled you will need to get in
touch with food services at :231-6953.

Ms.D is exactly correct. The other side to this is we need to stop
wanting hold everyone else accountable. We all know that school starts
in August and ends sometime around May-June. That is a parental
responsibilities that can be handled during the summer with Student
Nutrition (who happens to work year-round).I am a parent of a student
that attends St. Andrews Middle School and I had several questions about
the lunch transition. So, since I had questions and I know the school
site employees are away during the summer months, I picked up the phone
and inquired myself. We must realize that beginning of school is quite
chaotic most times and no student will be denied lunch, however you have
to be persistent with some school duties and lunch applications happens
to be one of them.
