Press Conference to announce "A Clean Your Slate" workshop
[Columbia, S.C.] The Columbia Urban League will host a press conference
at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, to release details about its upcoming
"A Clean Your Slate" expungement workshop. The press conference will be
held at the Urban League office, 1400 Barnwell St., Columbia.
People charged with certain crimes who want to clear their criminal
records are invited to the how-to workshop beginning at 10 a.m.
Saturday, Oct. 31, at Bible Way Church of Atlas Road, 2440 Atlas Road in
Columbia.
Not all crimes qualify for expungement. Some minor or misdemeanor
offenses may meet criteria for expungement.
This is the second expungement workshop offered by the Columbia Urban
League. Fifth Circuit Deputy Solicitor John Meadows will facilitate.
The first event was very successful with about 800 people attending.
"With today's economy, the smallest criminal infraction can present a
greater challenge in obtaining employment," said James T. McLawhorn,
Jr., president and CEO of the Columbia Urban League. "It also can
prevent students from securing government-sponsored scholarships. This
is an opportunity for those who qualify to clear their record."
