MESSAGE FROM ST. ANDREWS MIDDLE SCHOOL:
The agenda book has a brief message about "Prohibited Items". Cell phones are
mentioned in that section.
In the Student Discipline Code Book, it states "Statute 69-63-280: Possession
of paging devices or cellular telephones by public school students under age 18
is prohibited. Once detected, the pager or telephone is forfeited to the
school district. The only exception is for a student over 18 who is an active
member of firefighting or emergency medical service."
Possession of a cellular telephone in a public school is a Level 1 Offense.
Level 1 Offenses may involve any of the following interventions:
Verbal reprimand
Timeout
Referral to guidance counselor, social worker, or psychologist
Peer mediation
Lunch/recess or Saturday detention
Parent Conference
Restitution
Behavior Contract
Referral to School Intervention Team
In-School or After-School detention
In-School Suspension (1 - 5 days)
Out-of-School suspension (1 - 5 days)
Note: The principal may decide at any point after excessive Level 1 infractions
to assemble the School Intervention Team to recommend a students' placement
into an alternative program or seek assistance from the Hearing Office. This
also may occur at the request of the parent, teacher, or student.
Infractions of this nature are handled at the building level by the
administrator.
Usually, cell phones are taken from the students and held by the administrator
until a parent/guardian retrieves it. In some instances, for example,
excessive infractions, the cell phone is confiscated and given to the resource
officer. It may not be returned.
Again, this information may be found in the "Student Discipline Code." You may
