[sac-forum] Re: plain old observing?

Dan,
Darn. I was in Phx all day and so I could not dissuade you, before your decision was firmed up, from going to an inferior site. That is, in inferior site on a relative basis compared to my site. AJ has been here and it was his opinion that the seeing was better than the Cherry Rd site, which is not surprising to me because my place is about 1,000 feet higher. Elevation does make a difference. Also, the Cherry Rd site is somewhat in a bowl, whereas I am up on a ridge, about 600 ft higher than hwy 69 that runs through Dewey. This makes my site much better for air drainage and so it has better seeing. If you prefer "just-plain-observing", as you say, the Cherry Rd site is for you.

Of course there are some advantages to the Cherry Rd site. For example, if you like roughing it and relieving yourself as our cave ancestors did, there is this opportunity. Of course there is always the chance of getting bit by mosquitoes, or even rattlers, in embarrassing places, but I suppose the risk is acceptable for those who prefer this than using a modern toilet with running water. Also, if you like roughing it and eating cold sandwiches, beef jerky, baloney sandwiches, etc. than some really good food at the pot luck, the Cherry Rd site is for you.

I hope that somebody besides me will resist the lure of the potluck for some just-plain-observing at Cherry II. I’m eager to observe M 150 among the other choice objects on AJ’s list.
