You know, I learned something today. Thanks to the ambiguous dues
structure description on the Astronomical League's site, we used
nearly 40 messages to discuss paying for something that I would bet
now has unanimous agreement as being far too expensive.
It did seem like too good of a deal for the AL to allow individual
members the choice of whether to join.
I don't want to open an old wound here, but my original assertion has
been shown as correct. I contacted AL's President, Terry Mann, who
has verified that the only fee that the club would be responsible for
is $10.00. We can then decide if the club picks up the $7.50/$5.00
for each club member (as the KC club did), or allow those members
interested in joining pick up the tab for themselves each year. Yes,
the club must submit the payment, but it could be handled in the same
manner as we currently handle subscriptions or name tags as a
separate line item on the membership form.
Again, club expense: $10.00.
Oh, and she also said that this is the way it's always been, so this
is not a new procedure.

Yep, that's what I was saying about the KC club. IN that club,
your dues automatically enrolled you in the AL, so with 450
members, the KC club sent a check to the AL every year for $10
plus 450 x $5.00 or $2,260. For SAC to join as a 100% active club
would cost us $10 plus 87 x $7.50 or about $663.
Actually, if the club picked it up for a 100% membership, that number
would be 87 x $5.00, or $435.
It's quite obvious from the pushback that some of you are totally
against AL membership (for some reason that I'll never understand).
At this point, I'm no longer concerned either way, but I did want to
get the facts straight for the email record.
