Hello everyone,
At the March meeting, I announced that SAC had been donated a telescope and
the Board was looking into it. That situation has been resolved. Here's the
basic story.
I received an email from a gentlman, saying he had an older refractor he
wanted to donate, "to SAC or any other organization that may put it to good
use". The schools in his area had refused it, and suggested he look on the web
for a donor. He found SAC and contacted me. I told him SAC would be delighted
to accept his donation, and set up a meeting to accept it.
When he arrived, it was not the older 60mm or 90mm scope on a tripod and a
few eyepieces that I expected. It was a full-blown Meade 127 ED Apo, with GOTO
drive, field tripod, 60mm F/15 Vixen finder scope, many EP's and accessories.
A full listing is attached.
Being a bit of a dreamer, I immediately thought of a good use for it. I'd
ask SAC to build a rolloff observatory on the grounds of Stone Haven
Observatory to house both this setup and the Pierre Schwaar Binocular Chair,
for the use of club members and their acquaintances.
While several board members and others thought this a grand idea, it was
felt to be beyond the scope, (no pun), of the club. As there was no receipt
given the donor, or any formal acknowledgment of the gift, the Board suggested
he donate the setup instead directly to Stone Haven, as the usage would be the
same, and the intent could still be fulfilled.
I drafted a letter to the donor suggesting this, and he gladly accepted.
I've been looking into incorporating Stone Haven as a non-profit or LLC in the
past, and this looks like a good excuse/incentive to check further.
As you know, (I hope), there is a blanket invitation to visit us at SHO,
basically any time you call first. I say this all the time at meetings, and it
still stands. It is upon this basis that I believe you will agree that my
motive for accepting this gift as being for the use of the club, along with my
own use.
I'll be posting pictures of the setup sometime soon on the SHO pages of my
web site.
Thank you.
