[sac-forum] Re: Seti@home moves to BOINC

What Paul is referring to is that some commercial companies do not want
their employees running the SETI software on their company-owned
computers. The concept of SETI is that the search software analyzes
chunks of downloaded radio astronomy files while the PC is otherwise
idle. (Which of course, is most of the CPU time.....) Kind of like a
screensaver. This is o.k. for somebody's personal computer, but not o.k
for all companies, as the software automatically goes out on the web and
downloads fresh "chunks" of data to analyze. That alone is considered
to be a violation of security and firewalls, etc. Some companies take
a dim view of authorizing employees to use company assets for ANY
non-business related activities. This is the price one pays for being
employed.
