Seti@home is moving to a new platform called BOINC. BOINC allows
multiple projects to share resources (your computer). There are
currently five different projects including Seti@home. The others are:
Climateprediction.net study climate change
Einstein@home search for gravitational signals coming from pulsars
LHC@home improve the design of the CERN LHC particle
accelerator
Predictor@home investigate protein-related diseases
You can choose which projects you want to participate in and (I think)
interleave the running of the projects. The BOINC software takes care of
downloading the seti@home code and the workunits to be processed. It can
even download multiple workunits, so you can keep 2 days of workunits on
hand so it does have to always have to download a workunit at an
inconvenient moment. The configuration is fairly flexible, allowing you
to set the software to run only at certain times of day or only when your
computer has been idle for a while.
It looks like seti@home plans to end their "classic" version in April, so
the two other remaining members from SAC will have to switch soon.
Perhaps a few more of you will be interested in the other projects.
Before you install this software, be sure you are authorized to do so.
Some companies have rules against running this software.
