[sac-forum] Re: Saturday

This is indeed a great honor, but I am retired now and do not have the time. I nominate Rick, our President, to take my place and Steve Coe to take Steve Palmer's place. Since he is also retired he undoubtedly does not have the time either. These replacements would greatly benefit the club. Any Seconds? :-)

I think it is bad practice to on the fly change the location of a star
party that has been announced both in the newsletter and SAC's web site
as being at that location. I also view the attitude that, "well, you
should have been watching SAC-Forum (or AZ-Observing)" as merely a way
to take the blame off the club for not having _adequately_ informed the
members of a change. If there is a change of location, then I think it
is up to the club to make a _concerted_ effort to make phone calls and
send out email messages. If that is not something the officers want to
do, then I think _someone_, actually a small group, should go to the
site in case anyone shows up, like Steve. Face it, people have busy
lives and not everyone is as serious as observers as some of you. They,
therefore, probably would not even think of _having_ to subscribe to
SAC-Forum to make sure it is still being held at the announced location.
Why would they even think the location would change? After all it was
announced in two locations! In my opinion, if you pick a site, stick
with it. Too bad for you if the weather turns bad and you missed a good
night. All you officers have a responsibility to the club, not
satisfying your own selfish needs to make sure a night of observing is
not wasted. I am sure at the next or a future meeting an announcement
will be made that, in effect, makes it the responsibility of the members
themselves to ferret out, in whatever way they can, changes in the
location of a star party. Bad if this happens.

I'm feeling in a particularly ornery mood this morning and I am sure
this message will have ruffled plenty of feathers.

Steve,

Yes the event we are currently discussing is the DOTM star party. At this point, it is up in the air as to where or if we will go. The Cherry road site is the "official" location, but we are not tied to it. If the wx is crap there and prospects look better at the antennas, we could end up there. Keep your eyes posted to the thread and you should see where people will end up.

To address your other concerns:

First, events are not technically canceled. If the wx is crappy generally people will not go out. Second, we do not use the website to update status of star parties. That would take a fulltime webmaster sitting at the computer constantly checking

and updating. The website is there mainly as a repository for SAC databases

& other club info and as a point of contact.
We have found over the years that the mailing lists are the best way to communicate intentions regarding events. Usually the thread will start around Thursday and continue on from there. If no one has posted and you are not sure if anyone is planning to head up, please feel free to post and

ask if anyone is planning to head out. I'm certain you'll get a response.

As for last week, I can't say as I was just returning from vacation. I got back to PHX around 1900 and from what I could see the wx didn't look to good, so I imagine that is why no one was there. Again had you posted to the list, I'm sure you'd have gotten the information you needed to determine if it would be worth the tank of gas.

I am confused. Looking at the SAC calender (older ver.) the star party @ Cherry rd was on 7th of July 2007. Well I made the 2hr+ drive up there (from Avondale) and could not find anyone or anything there!! There was nothing on the posts whether or not the event was going to be canceled due

to wx (no is there now). Well the wx was sh@#$%! that night. Waste of a tank of gas (very expensive). Now that I looked up on the web, @ the updated calendar and there is a DOTM star party @ cherry rd on 14Jul07. Is this the event you all are discussing? If so, why was there no cancellation notice / mesg's regarding the 7Jul07 event? I would like to attend (wx) permitting, but would also need verification of location. I DO NOT WANT TO WASTE ANOTHER TANK OF GAS, GOING NOWHERE!!! Just my food for thought, the lists ave seems very slow, inefficient and very cumbersome. Obviously the SAC website needs to have a seperate page on notice to update on the status of club events more efficiently, quickly and in a timely manner... Again, my two cents worth..
Thanks for any updates / verfication...
 Respectfully,
Steve

It is 11:30 pm Friday and I am quitting for the night. It is completely clear from horizon to horizon except very low to the south where Phx is and the desert.

I can't say what Saturday will be like, but last night up here (15 mi. w. Cherry site) was clear all night. Tonight looks like it will be another good night. This is a far cry from Monday and Tuesday and earlier. Earlier in the week the forecasts had been 40% rain all week. Now it is back down to its usual 20% which I take as a standard cover their a__ factor in their forecasts.

OK, I'll start. Although right now it doesn't look promising wx-wise, I'm
willing to remain optimistic. Anyone else thinking about getting some
eyepiece time at Cherry Rd Saturday?

Hoping for the best
