Here is more from Dick Harshaw on the Struves and the symbols used to
symbolize their catalogs. I have had time to explore the web sites that
Dick gives, but I will certainly get at them later, I have not doubt that
they are a fount of information.
Steve
The original Struve catalog is that of Freidrich Wilhelm Struve (usually
abbreviated STF or with a capital Greek Sigma). My Observation Log note
field has this to say:
STF = Freidrich Wilhelm Struve, 1793-1864. The STF stars are his Dorpat
Catalog of 1827. The "rej" that appears on some of the stars (as it
does also in the OS stars) means that Freidrich rejected the pair from
his original catalog because he thought it was too far apart to merit
further study. In a two-year project, Struve made 10,448 measurements
and produced a list of 3,112 pairs of which 2,343 were new.
SI = F. W. Struve's First Index Catalog.
SII = F. W. Struve's Second Index Catalog.
OS = Otto Struve, 1819-1905. At 18 years of age, Otto became his
father's assistant at Dorpat. His double star work includes the
discovery of 547 pairs. The OS stars are his original Pulkovo catalog
of 1843.
OSS = Otto Struve Index Catalog, 1843, containing wide pairs.
There is also an Herman Struve (don't know the relationship).
The second "Otto" (who worked at McDonald) is not the Otto of the
catalog. That Otto worked a year or so at Yerkes before he died.
