That's not what Gene is saying at all. He meant how the list was originally 
formed. The H400 award list "is" a stated list of 400 NGC objects, "not" any of 
the 2415 NGC objects as you are saying below. (Unless you were joking and I 
didn't get it.)

I have the ©1980 "Observe The Herschel Objects" light brown cover booklet with 
the Herschel scope on the cover.

 

I couldn't find 1750 or 7814 listed in it.

 

And, the letter from Brenda Branchett of the Ancient City Astronomers dated 
8-20-91 when I was awarded cert. #64:

 

She wrote, "NGC1758, open cluster in Taurus is the 400th object! There are only 
399 listed in the manual! Our error.

(H 21-7) 5h 06, +23° 44."

 

Also, I found a printed copy of the version 1.0, May 6, 1991 by AJ Crayon, "400 
Herschel Objects for SAC Club Awards".

It lists NGC 1750, TAU, OC, 5h 3.9, +23 39. It does not list NGC 7814. (Like 
you stated in your original post here.) And, NGC 1758 is not listed either.

 

And I just looked at the on-line NGC/IC Project database, and 1758 is plotted 
between 1746 and 1750 in same field!

Interesting.  If that's true I was done a long time ago!  I have logged over 
100 additional Herschel objects beyond the 380 list objects I currently have in 
my H-400 "list" log as I am also working on the "1000 Objects Not Included On 
Any Other List" uh .. list :-)   I feel bad for the folks that struggled for 
years to get the last few "list" objects when they most certainly observed many 
additional "non-list" Herschel objects over the course of observing the "list" 
objects.  

 

But then this leads to another more sinister situation . . .  If the Herschel 
400 "list" is really any 400 objects from the 2514 "Herschel" objects, then is 
the full 2514 "Herschel" objects list a "list" whereby now my quest for the 
"1000 Objects Not Included on Any Other List" list has to be objects exclusive 
of the entire 2514 "Herschel List" list????
