[sac-forum] Re: SAC H400 List

Fellow Deep Sky archivists:
Here's what I can contribute... several web references which may shed some light, or maybe just more "noise"... The AL H400 lists are given in several ways. Anyways, I couldn't find my printed copy of the AL H400 list with the "brown" cover.
It might be worth noting that the author of the materials and list(s) used for the AL Herschel 400 Certificate program, Brenda Branchett indicated privately, when she and her husband visited SAC some years ago, that the collection of "400" Herschel objects originally put together by the Ancient City Astronomers club in St. Augustine, Florida consisted of >>just those observations that their members had collected<< with various small telescopes.... There WAS NO systematic survey or attempt to include any particular group(s) of objects!
I note that, as another example of where this leads (for instance), that although there are about 400 Herschel objects shown on the Norton's Star Atlas charts (dating from the early 1900s), there are a number of Herschel objects that are NOT in the AL400 list, and vice-versa....
There are a total of (at least) 2514 "Herschel Objects" (found by William Herschel) to pick from !!
