Thanks Jeff and Paul. I will go on the fence and say I could learn C++ it in
less than a year, provided I have the right learning environment and good
examples to aid me. But, since I have no astronomical application (at the
moment at least) I have no impetus to learn it for now. The intent of my
original question was to get other opinions since C (or C++) is talked about
at times in SAS-L, and it was a requirement in the phylogenetic research job
I had mentioned.

p.s., Yes, I recognize that this is slightly off topic, but I say 'slightly'
because there are programming applications in astronomy beyond visual
observing.

What is your opinion of C? It has a reputation of being very fast and easy
tolearn, and I know of one case where it is being used in academic research
to write programs for phyogenetic studies because it is so fast.. Stan Paul

newsletter, but technical problems with it's production would be great (eg
examples use a lot of vertical, but little horizontal space) and the
articleswould only appear slowly. So I'm posting them here -Paul ----- This
is way off topic. C is out of date. C++ is the new fella. Actually there is
aD out now too. C++ is very powerful if you wish to invest in learning it
(plan on 1 - 2 years). For anyone interested in finding out more about C++
check the primer I have at
http://www.hposoft.com/Programming/C++%20Primer.html[1] C++ as with C can be
complied for different platforms. This protects your code and makes the
program run much faster. Personally I use FileMaker Pro as a cross-platform
Rapid Application Development System. I can put together a program and have
it up and running in a small fraction of the time it would take to do it in
C/C++. While FileMaker Pro is a database development program, it is
surprising how many applications are really databases (e.g., creation and
archiving of newsletter (data can be exported in .pdf format and/or served
onthe web), astro photographs, observations and any other data. Jeff
