[sac-forum] Re: Observing Awards

Hey All,

Some excellent points and ideas are brought up in this discussion. My
viewpoints, unsolicited of course, are...

Add a "Member-at-large" membership as an option in order for any
participants to be eligiable for any awards.
You could even upgrade them, at a slightly higher cost, to recieve the
newsletter. I see no reason not to capitalize on this if all the costs are
paid by the M-A-L.

Try to have a club officer in the M-A-L's area confirm the observations, no
different than if AJ had done it. In absence of a club officer, have the
participant send us COPIES of his notes, thus saving us the postage of
sending the originals back to the participant. If we get totally flooded,
then I'm sure some gentle coercing would generate a volunteer or two, myself
included. Reading astro notes beats TV nearly anytime.

If the awards are gauranteed to not throw our 'scope out of balance, then
surely it won't break the bank to mail JUST THE AWARD (and a letter of
congrats and appreciation.) back to wherever the participant is. And so
what if it has to take the slow boat to China, it's not like it's a life
saving shipment of penicillin.

I agree that there are some logistical things to hammer out, but I think
that the spirit of the club is such that we are inclined to work this
through. The idea is to spread the joy of astronomy to the masses, right?
Be a shame to have such a first class organization not doing just that.

"In what was facetiously called 'the Univeristy of the Far East',
the better-educated officers lectured enlisted men in history,
French, and biology. Astronomy was the most popular class of all.
Lying on their backs beneath the Southern Cross, the POWs followed
the course of the stars and planets, bathed themselves in meteor
showers, and took their minds off this world by contemplating others."
