Stan, I can probably help
We have survey grade GPS equipment here at our offices we rarely use. It is
not user friendly, and GPS will sometimes not work under a tree canopy very
easily.
If you are needing positional accuracy in relationship to a known point, you
need a known monument to start from. If you are in Maricopa County, they
have their GDAC points all over the place, plus their densification points
on almost every street corner.
If you are up in the woods, without known control nearby, then a few more
steps need to be taken, but it can be done.
Survey grade GPS has an inherent accuracy of about 1 -2 centimeters. Using
control, positional accuracy can be repeatedly measured to probably .001
foot or better, if the proper techniques are used. For our mapping work,
the surveyors gives us coordinates to 3 decimal places, and usually
calculate to the 5th or 7th place. We can see and measure on our
instruments to a couple of tenths of a foot on large scale accurate mapping.
I am not sure what the most secure way of contacting me would be. If there
is a club roster, I should be in it.
Thanks,
Robert G. Parks
