Hey Peter,

Unfortunately you're going to run into that more and more.  And one of
the biggest things to be concerned about is as of May of last year
Microsoft stopped supporting Win98 and WinME, so that means no security
updates or patches anymore.  I would highly recommend upgrading to WinXP
as soon as you can or you're going to soon find your system full of
viruses and trojans if it isn't already.  Assuming it's not brand new
hardware Vista is going to kill it - it's requirements are just way too
high for anything a few years old unless it was totally top of the line
big $$$ just a few years ago.  But WinXP should be fine.

Another open is to switch over to Linux.  I've been running Ubuntu Linux
on my system for over a year.  Google has a version of Google Earth for
Linux and it's fast & stable.  I haven't had a chance yet to see if the
Google Sky works with it.
