Hello everyone,
Here's a chance to get your voice out for astronomers. I'm forwarding
this because I think
the more answers we can give her, the better assessment she will be able
to make for her
article. Rick, this is your chance for a 3rd shot a journalistic fame. :-)
Thad
This is Kimberly Hosey. I am a freelance writer and student science
writer at ASU. I've written a few articles about astronomy and
cosmology for general audiences, and I'm currently writing an article
about Arizona's current contributions to astronomy, particularly with
new developments (I'm thinking of focusing on the James Webb Space
Telescope, which is currently in construction and has at least four
university professors that I know of on its Science Working Group).
The Arizona Republic has shown interest in the article, and they want
me to write it ASAP. I'd really like to get the opinions of astronomy
enthusiasts in Arizona - you probably have the best take on the
subject. So if you have the time for just a few brief questions:
1. What can you say, either in general or specifically, about
Arizona's contributions to the latest developments and observations in
astronomy? How have Arizona astronomers contributed to the field
lately, and how does Arizona itself help, as a great site for
observatories?
2. I noticed a handful of Arizona astronomy clubs - is this typical,
or do you think Arizona in particular (or with certain other areas)
fosters an enthusiasm for astronomy? Have you all just congregated by
chance, or is it something about the area that inspired you? I have
noticed the clear desert skies are particularly good for observation.
Do any of you come from other areas where there is less enthusiasm for
astronomy, or did you get into it only after moving to Arizona?
3. Particularly for the deep-sky enthusiasts among you, what do you
think of Arizona astronomers' contributions lately to deep-field and
ultra deep-field research? I know ASU and U of A both have scientists
on Hubble's Ultra Deep Field research team as well as the JWST. How
big of a role is Arizona playing in this exciting field - which is
likely to only expand as the research progresses?
Those are all my questions for now. If you have anything else to add
at all about Arizona's role in astronomy or cosmology research, or if
you know of anyone else I should contact, by all means let me know. I
appreciate your time and attention, and I'll look forward to hearing
from you. I'd love to join a club like this once my life permits.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Hosey
