This came from EVAC treasurer and is asking for assistance. Anyone on
either list interested in working with an exchange student from China for a
year? Please one of the undersigned if you are interested.

Please excuse the intrusion but the EVACONLINE list server is down and we
have no estimated up time. I received the following message and I am
forwarding it on. Perhaps someone is interested in taking an exchange
student for a school year.
Thanks,

Subject: JiaCheng
Hi Ray,
I apologize if this is "spamming" you, but I am trying to find a volunteer
host family for an astronomy-loving exchange students for the coming
2009-2010 school year. So I am coming to you ask if there is any
possibility you could help me -- Perhaps you have an e-mail list of
astronomy club members you could send this to? Or certain families you can
think of who might be interested -- maybe even you own?
JiaCheng is 17-years-old and from Beijing China. In his application letter
he says "I am interested in Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry and Economy. I
am in the Astronomy club of the school and participated in an Astronomy
contest. Could you imagine being alone under the starry night, curling up
with a telescope, enjoying the shinning stars? I just love the feelings!"
Here's more of his letter, it's very imaginative! "City born and city
bred, the boring and monotonous routine has come along with me throughout
almost all my childhood. Being away from countryside and the wild nature,
I've got no chances to adventure or expedition...I am really looking
forward to an exciting life in America, and hope to see you soon!"
Even though exchange students are never guaranteed a certain type of
family, I would LOVE to see JiaCheng go to a home that shares his
interests and passion!
Time really is of the essence, as the deadline is July 1st!
FYI - This student, among others I work with, is coming to the US through
a government-sponsored nonprofit agency. All students come with full
insurance, spending money and are highly screened and monitored during
their stay. "Hosting" simply means providing room and board, and the
willingness to make the student a part of your family (including chores,
church, etc.).
And on a personal note, my own family has had exchange students live with
us 7 times, and now we truly feel we have "sons" and "daughters" from
China, Brazil, Germany, Italy, France, Turkey and Hong Kong :)
Thank you for your time. Please let me know if you can help out!
