The League policy is a two-fold policy-- a club pays a fee to be instated or
registered (I believe the base fee is an annual thing?) and then it pays so
much per year per member on a graduated scale-- the more membership, the
fewer dollars per member (although the total amount can rise pretty high).
Like I said, the KC club paid around $2,000 a year for AL privileges (450
members), and since they did public star parties almost every week (mostly
at schools and churches), the League's liability insurance was a big draw
for them. The ASKC was also big into the observing clubs-- at one time (and
maybe still), they were the #2 or #3 club in the country for AL awards, and
still have the largest percentage of Master Observers in the US. To them,
the dues were worth it. (Some guys have vests with all the bling on them--
look like an Eagle Scout at a Jamboree!).

Dick,
Please clarify, from what I gather I believe Tim has interpreted the Society
membership as SAC pay $10.00 and anyone who cares to joins pays $7.50.
My impression as that when we join the Al want to know how many of there are
and we pay accordingly.
Which would it be?

My tuppence is if you want to go for a League award, join as a
member-at-large and do it. Having come from a League-affiliated club in
Kansas City, the League dues for a club are more than SAC is able to bear at
this time.

Jack, for the Herschel 400, aka Herschel I, SAC donates to the AL

Hmmm, and was that "donation" more than $10?
Seems like being a member club ($10.00) and letting our members ante
up the $7.50 each for AL membership if they so choose would actually
be a good idea and potentially a bargain if more of us decide to go
after the H-I or H-II.
