[sac-forum] Re: Curious

Scott was a great help to me when I first got started. When I first got to doing the Messier I forwarded my logbook to him when I had like 20 entries to make sure I was doing the right thing for the AL Messier. I didn't want to track down all of them and find out I was not doing the log correctly.. Anyway I was only logging like "found it, wow its cool!" kind of entries and he gently steared me toward actually seeing and recording details and trying to suck out as much as possible at the eyepiece. His help not only led to better log entries, I found I enjoyed it more too. Great guy.. he helped me a lot.

Hey, Dave, I am a friend of Scott Kranz. We have observed together many times in the Midwest.

As a former member of the Astronomical Society of Kansas City, a League club, I can vouch for the spurious value to SAC of belonging. The main thing is the observing programs, and SAC has a much better collection (IMHO) than the AL, especially the latest AL programs (planetary nebulae, open clusters).

I'm also an AL "member at large", so no offense to the AL. Folks in the AL like Brenda and Dave Branchett, Scott Kranz, and Steven Nathan have all been very helpful to me. But as a member of both, I don't see that the SAC would
gain anything with an AL affiliation.

To my recollection of conversations regarding AL membership & SAC, there
just doesn't seem to be enough benefit to members or interest to warrant
the expense of membership.

I just received the Dec issue of Reflector, a publication of the
Astronomical League. In it is an article about Jeff Medkeff. I wondered
how I got it but then I discovered from the address that it came from
The Prescott Astronomy Club because of my membership in the club. It
came with a membership directory and so I looked for SAC. I could find
the Phoenix Astronomical Society, RTMC, the Desert Foothills Astronomy
Club, the Tucson Astronomical League, and the Roswell Astronomy Club
where we used to live in 1957-1959. Why is SAC not a member? I seem to
recall this may have been discussed some time in the past but do not
remember what was said.
