In spite of the predicted cold, the antenna's was not unpopulated last
night. When I showed up around 1600 Jimmy Ray was there wondering what other
nuts would show. Dick Harshaw & Darrel Spencer were nuts 4 & 5 and just
before dark Chris Hanrahan made it out. 5 cars a6 observers (Darrel brought
his significant other Noon (I hope I spelled it correctly, apologies if
not).
The cold got me digging into the "Cold Bag" before sunset. When I went to
set up my tent I realized I forgot the tent stakes DOH! Fortunately Jimmy
saved me from an uncomfortable night in the car as he had just enough to get
the tent up. That would be the last snag of the night. As the sunset and
twilight darkened I set to work on AJ's Trumpler challenge and the Call for
Obs Objects in Cassiopeia. I finished the entire list by 2100. Spent the
rest of the night visiting old friends (both in the sky and on the ground).
While visiting with Chris I introduced him to NGC's 1808 &n1792 in Columba.
He then went a bit further south and found GC NGC 1851, which we all agreed
was surprisingly right & rich for a globular so far off the beaten path.
I called it quits just after midnight as I was getting bit punchy and
tripping over everything. According to Jimmy's thermometer, it was a balmy
36 degree when I sacked out. When we got up this morning it was 34. BRRR.
After packing Up Jimmy Chris & I went exploring, looking for the remains on
an old airway beacon that used be located about 3 miles south of the site.
While we didn't find any remnants of the beacon, Jimmy found lots of old
junk that had some kind of historical significance (Read that: it was OLD).
We then went over the old airfield east of the Site and explored around
there a bit, Jimmy found more junk. I looked for but couldn't find a survey
marker. IT was a fun exploring the desert and thinking about some of the
things that happened there long ago.
The fun factor certainly outweighed the cold factor. Hope to do it again
next month
