This was how I remember it.

From memory, the 1000+ award was a repeatable award for each additional
1000 new (since the last 1000+ award was given) objects observed.  It was
basically created as a "let's give Steve Coe an Observing Award" that was
reasonable enough for the rest of us mortals to achieve.  :-)  Moving 110
possible objects out of the 1000+ is a bit unfair, especially since the
"Beyond the NGC" came later.

BTW - Has anyone besides Steve Coe received the 1000+ award?
