There seems to three schools of thought among those dissenting:
1) Signing a waiver signs you into slavery to the parties being
protected.
2) Waivers don't work.
Both are opposite extremes of each other. I suggest reading:

How many of the dissenters have read the drafted version of the liability
release for the Messier Marathon?
3) Waivers makes law suites more likely.
For this I suspect insurance is the cause of far more law suites than
waivers. Waivers are used where injuries and losses are likely to
happen. So if anything does happened and it's possibly not covered by
the waiver, and there's money to be gathered, then a law suite is likely.
