Paul, thanks for the additional information; but, as you have probably
already read, my system is up and running - except for restoring data.  My
best guess, as to what happened, is the power surge caused a head crash.  If
it were something more serious it would never have booted, or perhaps
recognize power being turned on.

The head crash, again some guessing here, damaged a spot on the hard drive
that contained the  antivirus driver, causing the system to crash just after
entering password while it did its initializing.  I turned the driver off,
was able to boot system and do a lot of things.  One thing I didn't do was go
on the internet - not without the virus protection!  One thing I did was
backup my data - which I'm going to restore in about five minutes.

Again, thanks for the additional information; it may yet come in handy,
