As I understand it SAC is considering implementing waivers in an effort to
protect the club and its officers in the event of a lawsuit. And no signed
waiver will excuse the club (or anyone, for that matter) from acts of gross
negligence. In my mind it is debateable whether the waiver will actually
afford this protection, but not having one certainly will not offer the
club this protection.
Let's face it, we live in a litigious society. I can still remember a time
when you expected coffee to be hot and if you spilled it onto your crotch
it was your own fault.
I don't think the Grand Canyon has changed much in the last couple of
decades (below the rim, anyway) but there is certainly more paperwork one
must complete before descending these days on an overnight odyssey. There
are many similar examples of organizers and administrators taking steps to
minimize their risks.
I'm certainly not trying to change your mind -- not that I could -- I just
hope this whole waiver thing doesn't have a negative effect on what has
been some wonderful events.
Peter

Then why have a waiver? If events in the future will be as they were in
the past, then no waiver is needed, right? The logic is the locic. If
things in the future will be different than in the past, then maybe a
waiver is needed, right? I have no idea what that translates into, but I
can assure you that I don't want to be around to experience it. My choice.
Absolutely. I choose not to sign away my rights, you choose to do the
opposite. Those are our individual choices, and we both will have to live
with the consequences, whatever they may turn out to be. I too choose not
to worry about those matters, hence I will not sign nor attend. My choice.
Pretty simple.
