Hello fellow SAC members,

Recently, SAC board and helpful club members have discussed many 
interesting and difficult topics, and these topics are moving forward at 
a pace that will soon involve the general membership.  I would like to 
outline what is happening so that the club members will have ample time 
to assist the club regarding these topics.
            For many years, the topic of incorporating the Saguaro 
Astronomy Club has been bandied about, without much forward progress.  
That is, until now.  This past July 22, the board voted to move forward 
with incorporating the club.  With much discussion, the board and 
several helpful members agreed that while there is an increase in 
paperwork, there are some distinct advantages to incorporating.

 The other issue put into motion is the use of waivers at SAC events.  
Of course, the event that we are most concerned about is the Messier 
Marathon.  It obviously attracts the most people from many places around 
the country and world.  The advice of the club's counsel was that we 
gather waivers for events the club held.  Much work still needs to be 
done with this issue, but we feel that we will be ready to implement it 
by year's end providing the membership agrees.

Both issues were brought forth with the goal of protecting the club in 
the highly unlikely event of a legal action.  Neither action will 
completely shield the club from a legal action, but the general 
consensus is that both motions will provide a layer of legal protection 
should the need arise. With that being said however, both matters are 
not closed as of yet, and this is where you, the membership, comes into 
play.  This coming general meeting of the Saguaro Astronomy club, a vote 
of the general membership will be held regarding the incorporating of 
the club as well as waivers for SAC events.  The vote by the members of 
the club will decide whether or not these items move forward.  It is for 
this reason that the SAC board asks that, if at all possible, the 
membership please be present at the upcoming meeting for this important 
vote.

            And while I have your attention, I would like to remind the 
SAC membership that all general members are welcome to join in on the 
board discussions on the SAC Board e-mail list, as well as attend any 
board meetings you can make it to. We are happy to hear your opinion, 
and it is possible that some of you might just have experience or 
expertise that could be valuable to the club.
