[sac-board] Mt. Graham Observatory Tour

Hello SAC Members,
The SAC Sept 8 tour of Mt. Graham is booked, but we still have four or five
openings for the July 28 tour. Call or email me for more info. If you would
like to sign on for Saturday, July 28, let me know by Friday nite!
The tours feature a trip up scenic Mount Graham, focusing on the mountain's
rich geology, history, and diversity of life; a lunch near the summit of the
mountain; and a guided tour of the present observatory facility, which
consists of the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope
<http://clavius.as.arizona.edu/vo/vatt.html> and the Heinrich Hertz
Submillimeter Telescope <http://maisel.as.arizona.edu:8080/smt.html>. The
construction site of the Large Binocular Telescope
<http://medusa.as.arizona.edu/lbtwww/lbt.html>, which will be the world's
most powerful optical telescope when completed, will be visited if there is
no construction in progress on the day of the tour.
After returning from Mt. Graham, passengers will be able to spend an evening
touring Discovery Park (http://www.discoverypark.com). This will include a
Docent-guided tour of the Gov Aker Observatory, a presentation in the
multi-media room, and, if weather permits, stargazing through the Gov Aker
Observatory's 20-inch telescope.

The tour van leaves Discovery Park at 10:00 AM and returns at 4:00 PM. Plan
to arrive about 9:30 AM for check-in. Lunch is included in the price of the
ticket, which is $15 per person. Some suggested items you may want to bring
include:
A jacket or sweater (the weather on the mountain is cooler)
        Comfortable closed-in walking shoes
        Chap stick
        Sunscreen
        Sun glasses
        Hat
        Camera / Film
Dramamine, if needed (the road is quite curvy)
        Aspirin
A small bottle of water, if needed
Due to the length of the trip (two hours each way) and the winding road
conditions, the tours are limited to children 10 years of age or older.
