Gulp! My mind has been jogged by both Ricks's comments. First
insurance, while I haven't asked, their web site indicates attendance at
upcoming events, ones far more major than our marathon and ones that
garner large articles in popular astronomy magazines. Implication here
is they are aware of star party etiquette and its activities.
This is not the first vendor. In the past one from, Tucson I think, has
showed up at the last two or three marathon. I think their major
product is signs, but there may be others they pedal. These folks have
been pretty low profile and have not caused problems. They haven't
asked permission in the past, just showed up.
As far as how much more work Jack and I are willing to take on - the
answer is not much more. Note the discussion over turning in the check
list at the end of the marathon.
The best way I know of to reign these in, or stop them, is to have the
announcement on the web site indicate the position. It's pretty
difficult to change the rules in the middle of the game. Perhaps a
special bored meeting after the marathon to go over things for the next
one? Not much asking for one meeting, but it does set a precedent. But
this could grow and it isn't something I'm willing to take on, perhaps
there are some others willing?
Thanks for the reminder,
aj
