[sac-board] Herschel II Proposal

After having waited some time for feed back on this request, and getting none,
I am making a proposal for this award. My hope is for us to have a discussion
and, eventually, a vote. Does this sound reasonable?

This proposal is to include a Herschel II award for SAC members and consists of
the same objects as that provided by The Rose City Astronomy Club and supported
by the Astronomical League.
Reason for this request is because SAC has a member that has completed the HII
program and I'd like for us to be able to supply an award. Furthermore I
understand there are two or three others that will being this program when they
complete their current programs.

Another reason for this proposal is because this award is only for AL members,
of which SAC is not a member so we are not eligible. Furthermore I'm not
proposing we become a member, what I am proposing is for SAC to support, on our
own, this program.

It is expected the program would be placed between the Herschel 400 and 1000
New Objects and the award be analogous with its placement. For a description
of the SAC observing programs see our web site at
http://www.saguaroastro.org/content/observing-programs-outline.htm

The Herschel 400 award includes the standard SAC telescope plate and, from the
AL, a pin, numbered certificate and entry into the list of observers completing
this program. See the web site at
http://www.astroleague.org/al/obsclubs/herschel/hers400.html for additional
information. Remember this is the only AL award that can be presented to a
non-AL member, or a non-AL club.

The 1000 New Objects is a SAC program that leaves it to the observer to find
1000 new objects not in prior observing programs. The award includes the
standard SAC telescope plate, an astronomy book of choice, 8"X10" plaque and
certificate. The cost of which is not to exceed $100.00. Only two observers
have this coveted award; Steve Coe in 1993 and Joe Goss in 2005.

To include the HII program the 1000 New Objects program description will have
to be modified to eliminate HII entries. This should still provide a challenge
for advanced observers. We must be careful here. When changing rules because
of folks that are already working this list. Hence any changes made will not
be retroactive meaning the old list and its rules apply for anyone working the
program when the changes are made.

Note that the 1000 New Objects doesn't exclude 110 Beyond the NGC. So the 1000
New Objects description would have to be modified to not include any of these
objects.

There has been a lot discussed here and if there is some confusion because of
my wording, let us know and I'll do my best to help clarify.
