Hi Rick & SAC Board:
Here are the minutes from July's meeting. I understood Laurie would be
sending out the August SACNEWS. Do you know if she ever got mailing labels
from us? The minutes thing is getting a bit confusing to me. 1. Are we
getting the August News from Laurie still? 2. Should Rick put these
minutes in his August/Sept. issue? 3. Should Rick wait until he gets
tonight's minutes from me to do and August/September issue? 4. Are the
Minutes a non-issue ie just don't worry about it Jennifer? Also my new E
mail address is kellerjt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx <mailto:kellerjt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> ,
my new phone at work is 602 378-2496.
Thanks

BITS & PIECES
MINUTES FROM July 23, 1999 MEETING

President Paul Dickson commenced the meeting at 7:30. There were 40 in
attendance. Jack Jones gave the treasurer report, brought in more SAC 110
Lunar Objects checklists for those wishing to do this observing project
which will earn you a telescope plaque for completion. The next Buckeye
Hills Star Party is August 7th. A.J. Crayon invited everyone to the Deep
Sky Group meeting which was on July 29th, constellations discussed were Lyra
& Aquarius. A.J. also spoke of 4 new observing list projects in the works
including Shallow Sky/Solar System, 110 Objects beyond the NGC, 1,000 new
objects list, and a project being arranged by Thad Robbinson & Ken Reeves
for Backyard/Urban observing. Stay tuned to our Web site
www.saguaroastro.org <http://www.saguaroastro.org> for updates & relative
lists. Adam Sunshine reminded us of the Lunar Prospector Crash that
occurred Saturday Morning July 31st @ 2:51 a.m. Hopefully a lot of us got
out to observe it, hopefully the montoosoon didn't interfere, and maybe that
remote chance of seeing the huge dust and water plume happened! There are
many web sites devoted to this project, tune in & post your observations if
you have some! Steve Coe gave Prescott Astronomy Club's invitation to their
2nd Annual Northern Arizona Star Party to be held September 10th & 11th near
Paulden, Arizona refer to their site for details-- www.pacnet.org
<http://www.pacnet.org> . Paul Dickson gave a presentation & updates on the
Setiathome project, & suggests updating to version 1.06 if you are a
participant. Paul, Steve Dodder, Adam Sunshine, Joe Goss & John McGrath are
currently listed as participants under the SAC group. If you are involved
in this project add your name to the list. John McGrath showed slides of a
72" scope in Ireland. Made in 1845 by the Earl of Ross, it was the largest
telescope in the world for 80 years!! A fascinating story and some great
pictures. Thanks. After break, our guest speaker was Tom McGrath who spoke
on x-ray astronomy and the physics of binary star systems--very informative,
interesting and educational. Thanks to you too! Steve Coe and Jerry Ratley
mentioned some possible new observing site ideas one being off Salome Road
30 minutes further than Buckeye Hills, and Oak Flat Campground by Superior.
There's a plan to investigate in September or October. Dean Kettleson from
the Steward Mirror Lab will be our next speaker at the August 27th meeting.
Darrel Nye is planned to speak in October/November on the Solar Eclipse.
The meeting adjourned at 9:45 with 16 of us meeting at JB's for further
discussion.
