[sac-board] Re: FW: Re: 2002 Events

I have been somewhat mystified by SAC's procedures. The entire ensuing
year's events are planned before the new president takes office. Not
only does this short change the new president, as far as being able to
shape the organization according to the direction he-she sees fit, but
doesn't it somewhat take away from the responsibilities of the Vice
President? Also, planning an entire year in advance really adversely
impacts on being able to take advantage of other events that were not
anticipated or known at the time. Granted, things can be changed, but
then it involves _undoing_ something, which is more difficult to do.
Also, although some of these things, such as the dates of star parties,
probably are pretty well established by the timing of the new moon, is
it so necessary to plan this an entire year in advance? Finally,
although it may make for a more efficient running of the club, I feel
the negative aspect of this practice is that it contributes toward
making the club more rigid and inflexible. In a sense, it runs contrary
to the philosophy behind term limits for officers.

For example, someone just questioned the timing of a May meeting in
relation to RTMC. Some, and maybe many, do not think in such long term
ways because, in a sense, who would conceive that events are planned an
entire year in advance? I certainly didn't until I saw (through these
messages) it happening. Merely defending the dates by saying this had
been posted and discussed last year only sidesteps one of the problems,
as I see it, with this practice.

These are just thoughts. Thankfully, I am not a board member or officer
and so I can make these without bearing the unforeseen consequences of
doing so.
