You are invited to attend the 2009 Spring Arts Festival at South Carolina State University on April 17-18th from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This event will feature activities and performances by students, faculty, staff and artists from the community in music, theatre, spoken word, exhibits, seminars, workshops, an art sale and vendors. Activities will be primarily located at the Fine Arts Building. During the arts festival, the Visual Arts program will be celebrating its recent accreditation by the National Association for Schools in Art and Design (NASAD) as well as acknowledging Dr. Leo Twiggs and his artwork and contributions to SCSU.

On Friday, lectures, workshops, presentations, and theatrical performance are scheduled at the Fine Arts Building. At the I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium there will be a tour of the “James Brown: Preserving the Legacy” exhibition as well as a planetarium show. On Saturday workshops will continue at the Fine Arts Building throughout the day. From 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the outdoor amphitheatre of the Fine Arts Building (or lobby area in case of poor weather), there will be scheduled performances throughout the day and vendors will be selling fine artwork, crafts, jewelry, natural beauty products, temporary tattoos, and more!

Saturday evening at 8:00 p.m. in the Martin Luther King auditorium (MLK), Moving Episodes dance group presents "Love Is in the Dance". Brian L. Williams, who is a dance instructor, choreographer and director for Champaign dancers, will direct this dance concert of contemporary ballet, jazz, and modern to be performed by SCSU students and Faculty/Staff. The concert will take a peek at dance from the Afro-American perspective on LOVE in three acts. Act 1, focuses on "Love for the Fellow Man", while acts 2 and 3 turn attention to the "Love of Inner Self" and the "Love of the Creator". The movement will be accompanied by the music of such artists as Nina Simone, Jazmine Sullivan, Etta James, Kanye West, Richard Smallwood and more. The closing gospel suite of Act 3 promises to allow the audience tap your feet, clap your hands, and join the company in its finale number, Tremaine Hawkins's "Goin' Up Yonder". For more information please call Brian L. Williams at (803) 533-3691.

In conjunction with the spring arts festival, there will be a Learning Exchange program - Resources for Social Change (RSC) with Alternate Roots Arts Organization (http://www.alternateroots.org). The theme is “Bridging the Gap between the Community and University”. The goal is to bring people from our local community together so that we can learn from one another and use art to create new experiences, connections and opportunities for everyone.

We are looking for individuals in the community to participate in the Learning Exchange during the festival. The idea is to create an open dialog and brainstorm on creative possibilities for bridging the gap between individuals from the community and university. If you and/or members from your school or organization would like to participate in the Learning Exchange, please contact Ms. LeDee, assistant professor of art at email: kledee@xxxxxxxxx
